Workshop Questions Answered

Concise answers to common questions. For an individual motorcycle, its documentation and a qualified inspection take priority.

01 — Does preload make a spring stiffer?

Not for a conventional linear spring. Preload changes installed force and operating position, not spring rate. Special spring arrangements can complicate the relationship. Read about support and geometry.

02 — Does high-speed damping mean motorway riding?

No. High-speed refers to damper shaft velocity. A sharp road input can create high shaft speed even at low vehicle speed. Follow the hydraulic explanation.

03 — Is there one correct sag percentage?

No. Appropriate values depend on the motorcycle, intended use, load and measurement convention. Use the relevant manufacturer's guidance.

04 — Can extra damping fix an unsuitable spring?

No. Damping resists movement; a spring provides position-dependent support. One cannot reliably substitute for the other.

05 — Does harshness prove there is too much compression damping?

No. Tyres, friction, travel limits, mechanical faults and damping can all contribute. A symptom alone does not establish a cause. Learn how to describe symptoms.

06 — Does electronic suspension remove maintenance needs?

No. Electronic control still depends on sound mechanical components, suitable springs, healthy fluid, seals and bearings. See how the hardware connects.

07 — Can I compare click counts between different dampers?

Not as equivalent damping values. Adjustment ranges, circuits and reference procedures vary between components.

08 — What information helps a suspension specialist?

Provide the exact motorcycle and hardware, load, tyre details, service history, recent changes and a factual description of the behaviour. Our local workshop-note tool can help organise a question without sending it.

09 — When should I stop riding rather than adjust settings?

Stop when leakage, damage, loose parts, sudden instability or another suspected fault may compromise safety. Arrange qualified inspection or recovery.
